Is there a more versatile piece of furniture in the home? It’s where you dry your hair, do your makeup, select your jewellery, fix your outfit and more. So here’s how to make the right choice of bespoke dressing table.
Dressing Table FAQs
Do I need a dressing table?
For all the benefits a bedroom vanity unit can bring, if space is going to be an issue, you might find other ways to get the benefits of a dressing table without needing, well, a dressing table.
If you have a drawer set or bedside table(s), either or both could offer the storage and display space offered by a dressing table. Wall mounted display units or shelves could also be a handy space saver if you’re struggling to fit a vanity unit in.
Where should my dressing table go?
Naturally, in most bedrooms the choice will inevitably be determined by space and where the vanity unit will fit best. But bear in mind that dressing tables have a practical job to do, so if you’re planning to sit at your dressing table and dry, straighten or curl your hair, you’ll want plug sockets close by.
You’ll also want as much natural light as possible, so position your dressing table to face – or at least be close by – a window. You don’t, however, want the sun in your eyes when you’re doing your makeup, so think about the way the light moves across the room during the day and take account of that.
Try to avoid placing your vanity unit so that you have your back to the light (natural or artificial), as you’ll end up trying to do your makeup in your own shadow.
Do I need a simple table top or drawers?
We would suggest practicality should always win out. There’s little point having a dressing table and then having to wander over to the drawer set or wardrobe to retrieve jewellery or makeup. If you can keep the clutter to a minimum and have everything you need to hand then a simple table style vanity unit should be fine, and they are certainly very on trend at present.
However, if a simple table top is likely to become very cluttered, very fast, opt for drawers.
Should I light my vanity table?
Yes! Remember that, whether you’re getting ready for work or the party, in winter the chances are you’ll be doing it in the dark. A table lamp is one option although it can take up valuable space, so consider lighting options built into the mirror. Don’t rely on the room’s main light as it will cast shadows.
